Stemming

Stemming helps match different forms of a word. SearchBlox supports stemming for content in 37 languages and allows it to be enabled or disabled for each collection individually.

Enabling Stemming

1. Stemming can be turned on or off in the collection settings.
2. By default, stemming is enabled for collections.
3. After making any changes, clear and reindex the collection.

Stemming in Search

• When stemming is enabled, inflected words are reduced to their root form.
• Inflection means words change form to show tense, number, gender, etc., and most languages use inflection.
• For example, running, runs, and ran are inflected forms of run.
• Searching for the root word will return documents containing both the root word and its inflected forms.
• When stemming is disabled, only the exact words searched will appear in the results.

Important Information:

Stemming can be enabled or disabled in SearchBlox’s collection settings. After saving the changes made, the collection needs to be cleared and then re-indexed for it to take effect.
